April, 2014…
While walking the streets of Havana, a gentleman noticed my camera and gestured for me to come closer. He led me to a building surrounded by scaffolding, its entrance blocked by corrugated metal - which he shoved to one side. There were two large wooden doors, secured by a chain and padlock. He pulled a healthy set of keys from his pocket and after a few clicks, he opened the doors in a rather dramatic fashion.
Pristine and silent, bereft of people, save for this caretaker… I was standing in one of the most beautiful spaces I’d ever seen.
I sat down on the floor, using my knees as a tripod.
I held my breath and made this photograph.
